My humble submission to the folks over at Comic Sans Project. I love what these guys are doing, and don’t get me wrong I agree that comic sans on a menu is probably not the best idea but it’s not a font that deserves to be ragged on as much as it does. Every new graphic designer acts like for millions of years fonts evolved and they eventually reached an apex in a modern sans-serif of some distinction (it shall remain nameless, it’s in vogue enough as is,) but the fact of the matter is that every job needs to have it’s font’s to be considered incredibly closely.

Poster I worked up as a tribute to my favorite font: Gotham. I had a hankering to do a font poster for a while now and it just took me forever to get around to it. Gotham is made by the Hoefler & Frere-Jones type faundry and was originally designed by Tobias Frere-Jones as a commisioned font for GQ magazine. oddly enough I started using it begrudgingly as I originally thought Avant Garde (famous for it’s inclusion in the magazine of the same name) was a better choice. Eventually I started to warm up to the almost architectural nature of Gotham and now I use it as my default modernist font, sorry Helvetica.
For full-size & alternate versions of the poster along with prints please visit my Deviantart and while you’re there maybe look at some of my other work. As usual you ca let me know what you think by E-mailing me @ opentype.blog@gmail.com
Brendan Dawes
Brendan Dawes is co-founder of Beep Industries and Executive Creative Director for magneticNorth, a digital design company based in Manchester, UK. I first found out about him while on a search for unique data presentations online, where I stumbled on his project doodlebuzz which is an excellent presentation of current news. I sincerely suggest everyone take a look at his personal website here especially his section “Notes on design” which has some tremendously good insights.
My website is officially finished and I’m taking this opportunity (much like I took the opportunity of my 1000th tweet this past wednesday) to shamelessly boost my ego and call it Baller… no hold that, Ballerific!… nay i say once again, Ballertasterificoucious! (bit much?) regardless, shameless self-promotion is what the next couple of months in my life should be structured on so I figure the relative safety of my blog is a decent enough place to start. Please check out my website at felo.co .
There is still plenty of room for improvement and I know this is starting point but I still want to know what you guys thinks so shoot me a line @ opentype.blog@gmail.com
